THE MUMMY Is Heading Back To Theaters For 25th Anniversary Screenings

If you remember seeing 1999’s The Mummy in theaters (like I do) it’s hard to believe the movie is turning 25 this year. The action-filled reboot of the classic Universal Monsters franchise starring Oscar-winners, Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz is returning to theaters for one week only to celebrate it’s milestone anniversary starting on April 26th.

Directed by Stephen Sommers, and featuring an ensemble cast including Kevin J. O'Connor, Arnold Vosloo, John Hannah, and Oded Fehr, The Mummy was a surprise hit when it was released in theaters, cementing Fraser’s status as a Hollywood leading man and giving Weisz her breakthrough film role.

Multiple sequels followed, including 2001’s The Mummy Returns and 2008’s The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. The film also spawned an animated series, Universal theme park attractions, and a spinoff/prequel franchise for The Scorpion King, Dwayne Johnson’s character from The Mummy Returns.

Even though Universal attempted to reboot The Mummy again a few years ago without Fraser and Weisz (and with Tom Cruise), this version of the series is the one people remain extremely nostalgic about. Which probably explains why they are bringing the movie back to theaters later this month giving a new generation the opportunity to watch it on the big screen.

“Over the past twenty-five years, The Mummy has become a cornerstone of adventure cinema and has set the bar high for blockbuster entertainment,” said Jim Orr, president of domestic theatrical distribution for Universal Pictures.

“As we celebrate its 25th anniversary, we couldn’t be more thrilled to bring it back to the big screen. It’s a fantastic opportunity for both devoted fans and newcomers to immerse themselves in the exhilarating adventure and timeless story that made The Mummy an unforgettable cinematic experience.”

The film opens just a week ahead of the re-release of Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace, which also celebrates it’s 25th anniversary this year.

Tickets for the anniversary screenings of The Mummy are on sale now at fandango.com.
