Democracy, But Make It Kawaii: Sanrio Character Ranking Returns

Cancel your plans, set your reminders, and maybe even light a candle—because it’s officially time to head to the Cinnamopolls. Yes, Sanrio’s annual Character Ranking is back, and we are here for it!

More than just a popularity contest, this year’s theme—“Sending Cheers and Hugs to Everyone Doing Their Very Best”—feels like a much-needed reminder that joy isn’t measured in rankings alone. It’s a celebration of connection, comfort, and the emotional bond fans share with these characters, whether they land in first place or fiftieth.

Still, let’s be honest: a little friendly competition never hurt anyone.

Last year saw a puppy-powered sweep, with Pompompurin claiming the crown, followed closely by Cinnamoroll and Pochacco. With 90 characters in the running this year, the leaderboard is anyone’s game—and fandom loyalty runs deep.

Voting is refreshingly easy (and dangerously addictive). Fans can cast their ballots daily online or stop by participating Sanrio stores and cafes across North America. And yes, there’s an “I Voted” sticker involved—because civic duty, but make it kawaii.

Beyond the digital ballots, the experience spills into real life with themed activations, limited-edition merch, and character meet-and-greets popping up at select locations, including Hot Topic stores and Sanrio cafes. It’s less of a vote and more of a full-blown fandom celebration.

For fans in California, the sweetest stop might just be the Hello Kitty and Friends Cafe at Universal CityWalk. Special event treats like Mixed Berry Sponge Cake and Mixed Berry Black Tea Lemonade are turning votes into a full sensory experience—because nothing pairs with democracy quite like dessert.

Voting runs through May 24, so whether you’re a longtime devotee of Cinnamoroll or a ride-or-die for an underdog favorite, now’s your moment to show up and show out.

Head over to Sanrio.com to cast your ballots After all, in the world of Sanrio, every vote is a love letter.
