James Bond fans may have to wait a while longer for the next 007 film, but you can catch Pierce Brosnan’s debut as the iconic super spy on the big screen again as GoldenEye heads back to theaters. The 1995 action classic, widely regarded as Brosnan’s best turn as 007, has been remastered in 4K and is heading to select theaters worldwide in celebration of its 30th anniversary.
The re-release kicks off on James Bond Day — October 3, marking the same date the very first Bond adventure (Dr. No) hit theaters back in 1962. In the U.S., the film will screen exclusively at Alamo Drafthouse locations.
GoldenEye wasn’t just another Bond movie — it was a pivotal reset for the franchise. After 1989’s Licence to Kill underperformed and MGM’s financial troubles put the series on ice for six long years, the future of the franchise looked uncertain. Enter Brosnan, director Martin Campbell, and the newly promoted producing duo Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson. The result was a sharp, stylish action thriller that pulled Bond into the post-Cold War era and revitalized the series for a new generation.

The film’s plot pits Bond against Janus, a criminal syndicate born from the collapse of the Soviet Union. Bond (Brosnan), under orders from the newly installed M (Judi Dench), travels to Russia and uncovers a plan to use a stolen satellite weapon — the titular GoldenEye — to unleash global chaos. The twist? The mastermind behind the plot is none other than Alec Trevelyan (Sean Bean), a presumed-dead former MI6 ally turned enemy. Alongside Russian programmer Natalya Simonova (Izabella Scorupco) and wisecracking CIA contact Jack Wade (Joe Don Baker), Bond faces off against Trevelyan’s deadly team, including the unforgettable hacker Boris (Alan Cumming) and fan-favorite villainess Xenia Onatopp (Famke Janssen).
The gamble paid off: GoldenEye raked in $356 million at the worldwide box office and earned strong reviews, securing Brosnan’s place in the Bond canon and set the stage for future installments — not to mention inspiring one of the most iconic video games of all time.
Fans can relive the action when GoldenEye returns to theaters on Friday, October 3. Tickets and showtimes are available now at 007.com.
