Batman fans will have to wait until 2027 to see the next installment of Matt Reeve’s take on the iconic franchise. While we’re all waiting the movies that started it all are heading back to theaters for one night only later this month. Variety is reporting that Warner Bros. and Dolby are bringing Tim Burton’s Batman (1989) and Batman Returns (1992) back to 160 Dolby Cinemas at AMC Theatres for a special one-night engagement on August 25 in ultra-vivid Dolby Vision picture and immersive Dolby Atmos sound.
Fun little piece of movie trivia — Batman Returns was the first feature film to ever be released in Dolby Digital, which began what we now know as surround sound. This’ll be the first time either movie has been presented in Dolby Vision or Atmos. The enhanced presentation will bring to life Tim Burton’s gothic vision of Gotham City with unprecedented clarity. According to Warner Bros., the Dolby Vision presentation will “deliver deeper blacks, sharper contrast, and more vivid colors”, and the Dolby Atmos will create a “multi-dimensional sound experience” that will elevate everything from the sounds of the Batwings engines to Danny Elfman’s amazing scores for the films.

“Batman and Batman Returns remain seminal films in the history of the Super Hero genre,” said Michelle Maddalena, Vice President of Global Content and Industry Relations at Dolby. “The new presentation of these films in Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos honors Tim Burton’s bold creativity while showcasing how far audio and image technology have evolved.”
Whether you’re experiencing Batman’s (Michael Keaton) most heroic moments or witnessing chilling scenes with iconic villains like The Joker (Jack Nicholson), The Penguin (Danny DeVito), and Catwoman (Michelle Pfeiffer), this is a great opportunity to see the films again — or for the first time — on a big screen. In a statement, Tim Burton said “I hadn’t watched these films since I made them, and seeing them again with this level of clarity, beauty, color, and sound felt really new and exciting.”
Tickets for the one night only screenings of Batman and Batman Returns are on sale now. You can get tickets here and here.
