Star Wars: A New Hope will be turning 50 in 2027, and to celebrate Disney announced it is bringing the film back to theaters to celebrate. The George Lucas classic will be returning to theaters on April 30, 2027, giving fans a chance to experience the movie the way it was meant to be seen — on the big screen! A New Hope originally hit theaters on May 25, 1977 and starred Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker, Harrison Ford as Han Solo and the late Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia. The film saw the introduction to one of the most iconic movie villains of all time, Darth Vader (physically played by David Prowse, with James Earl Jones providing the voice).
Disney is dropping the re-release a little early because that weekend is already reserved for the debut of a brand-new film, Star Wars: Starfighter, starring Ryan Gosling and Mia Goth. The anniversary screenings will also come a few short weeks after Star Wars Celebration Los Angeles (April 1-4 2027). With all eyes on Star Wars during that time you can bet Lucasfilm will lean into promoting the return of the film that kicked off the franchise. Maybe some of the original cast and crew will reunite during Star Wars Celebration!.

There’s still no word yet on which version of the film will be heading back to theaters. The prevailing thought is it’ll be the 1997 Special Edition which is George Lucas’ preferred version of the movie, with those added scenes and enhancements. However, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy was on hand recently for a very rare screening of an original print of Star Wars. So maybe that’s a little tease at what fans may be seeing during the re-release..
Other Star Wars films in development include a sequel starring Daisy Ridley as Rey, set 15 years after The Rise of Skywalker and directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. James Mangold is set to direct a film about the origins of the Force. Lucasfilm Chief Creative Officer, Dave Filoni is leading a film set between The Mandalorian and The Force Awakens. Taika Waititi is still attached to direct a film as well, while Simon Kinberg is developing a new Star Wars trilogy.
