Marvel Is Bringing “Avengers: Endgame” Back to Theaters Ahead of “Avengers: Doomsday”

Marvel Studios is diving into its own cinematic vault. With Avengers: Doomsday still a year away from its Dec. 18, 2026 debut, the studio has announced that 2019’s Avengers: Endgame is coming back to theaters for a limited engagement.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the re-release will arrive on Sept. 25, 2026, giving audiences one more chance to experience the MCU’s most emotionally loaded ensemble epic before the next Avengers installment lands. It also pairs neatly with the return of directors Joe and Anthony Russo, who are helming Doomsday after a multi-year break from Marvel filmmaking.

Revisiting a Cultural Juggernaut

There’s a practical logic behind Marvel reopening the doors to Endgame. When it premiered in 2019, the film became a box office monolith, earning nearly $2.8 billion worldwide and securing its place as the second-highest-grossing film domestically, behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

But it’s not just about revenue. Endgame remains one of the MCU’s most critically and culturally defining pieces, certified fresh at 94% on Rotten Tomatoes and still widely regarded as a high-water mark for the franchise. Marvel is clearly hoping to remind audiences what peak MCU storytelling looked like — and maybe recapture some of that theatrical momentum in the process.

The Downey Jr. Factor (In a Very Different Capacity)

Part of that nostalgic pull is Robert Downey Jr.’s final appearance as Tony Stark — a performance that functioned both as a character farewell and a capstone to the Infinity Saga. But Marvel’s upcoming slate complicates that farewell in new ways:

Downey is back for Avengers: Doomsday, but this time he’s stepping into the role of Doctor Doom. It’s a casting swing that could dramatically shift audience expectations and add another layer of curiosity to the re-release.

The upcoming film will also fold in characters from Thunderbolts*, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, and X-Men — signaling an Avengers movie structured less like a reunion and more like a convergence event.

Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to be released in theaters December 18, 2026.
