It’s official: the King of the Monsters has fallen!
In a move that’s shaking the kaiju fandom to its radioactive core, IDW is delivering the unthinkable in GODZILLA #6 — the death of Godzilla. Dropping January 7, 2026, the issue marks a seismic turning point in the Kai-Sei Era of Godzilla comics, written by Tim Seeley (Hack/Slash) and illustrated by Nikola Čižmešija.
But this isn’t just a one-off shocker. IDW has spent 2025 building an ambitious new shared Godzilla universe, and Seeley and Čižmešija aren’t wasting any time shaking up the status quo. The flagship series — already loaded with kaiju-sized action and emotional depth — now takes an even bolder swing: killing off the pop culture icon himself.
And to make the moment even more monumental, the publisher is going full comic book legend mode with a “Death of Superman” homage cover that will hit longtime fans right in the nostalgic feels. The cover for GODZILLA #6 comes from artist Dan Jurgens, inker Brett Breeding, and colorist Glenn Whitmore — the same trio who created the iconic image of Lois Lane holding Superman’s lifeless body on 1992’s Superman #75. This new version reimagines that heartbreaking pose with a kaiju twist, honoring one of the most famous covers in comic book history. Check it out below:

“When the folks at IDW asked about doing a special ‘Death of Godzilla’ cover inspired by Superman #75, I was definitely up for it,” Jurgens said. “I’ve always been a fan of the big guy but hadn’t had the chance to draw him — this was the perfect way to scratch that itch.”
For longtime readers, the emotional punch is real. Godzilla Product Development Manager Aaron John Gregory even compared the issue’s impact to the same gut-wrenching experience fans felt in 1992: “These types of comic events can’t be handled lightly. I was blown away by the consequential brutality of The Death of Superman — and I can tell you GODZILLA #6 delivers that same level of power. You may need a kaiju-sized Kleenex.”

But don’t worry — death in comics is never forever.
In February’s GODZILLA #7, the monster returns in the most mind-melting form yet: Kai-Sei Energy Godzilla — a being freed from physical constraints and unleashed with world-ending power. Editor Jake Williams teased, “Comics should be insane. And what’s more insane than killing Godzilla in the first ongoing Godzilla series in over a decade? Now’s the time to jump in.”

Toho International’s General Manager Kristin Parcell added that this bold storytelling direction embodies everything they want from modern Godzilla stories: “Our goal is always to expand and reimagine the mythology in bold and meaningful ways. The IDW comics line exemplifies that vision, offering stories that challenge expectations and captivate fans.”
Fans have until November 24, 2025, to pre-order GODZILLA #6 at their local comic shop — before the King of the Monsters takes his final bow (for now).
Because if there’s one thing Godzilla has taught us, it’s that even in death… something bigger always rises.
