It's been 40 years since Flashdance was initially released in theaters, becoming not just a box-office sensation, but also a musical and fashion sensation. The film’s soundtrack went on to win three Grammy’s and sell 20 million records worldwide, becoming one of the top selling records of all time, while star, Jennifer Beals’ gray sweatshirt sparked one of the biggest fashion trends of the early 1980’s.

To celebrate the 1983 classic, Paramount is giving fans the chance to relive those iconic dance scenes again with special 40th anniversary screenings in theaters nation-wide and a remastered version of the film in 4K Ultra HD on April 11, 2023. The new release includes the remastered film on Blu-ray, access to a digital copy of the film, and legacy bonus content. The bonus content includes an interview with director, Adrian Lyne about the film, how his team came up with Flashdance’s “look”, the theatrical trailer, and more!

Flashdance was released on April 15, 1983 and stars Beals as a young dancer who works at a steel mill in Pittsburgh with dreams of becoming a professional ballerina. The film also stars Michael Nouri, Lilia Skala, Sunny Johnson, and Kyle T. Heffner.

The movie wasn’t a hit with critics when it was released, but audiences disagreed. Flashdance was a smash hit at the box-office, earning more than $200 million against a humble $7 million budget, and it went on to influence other films in 1980s, including Footloose, Purple Rain, and Top Gun. The movie also earned four Academy Award nominations winning “Best Original Song” for the late Irene Cara’s song, “Flashdance…What a Feeling.”

Flashdance will return briefly to select theaters on April 26 and April 30. You can get more information about the anniversary screenings and buy tickets on the official Fathom Events website or at participating theater box offices.
